What is Rahu Ketu Puja? Understanding the Sacred Ritual

Rahu Ketu Puja, also known as Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja or Rahu Ketu Dosha Nivaran, is an ancient Vedic ceremony performed to appease and balance the energies of Rahu and Ketu—the two shadow planets (lunar nodes) that significantly influence human destiny. Unlike physical planets, Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node) are mathematical points where the Moon’s orbit intersects with the Sun’s apparent path, yet they wield immense power in shaping life events.

In Hindu mythology, Rahu and Ketu represent the severed head and body of the demon Svarbhanu, who was beheaded by Lord Vishnu during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) for drinking the nectar of immortality. The demon’s head became Rahu (representing worldly desires, illusions, materialism) while the body became Ketu (representing spirituality, detachment, past karma). Both achieve immortality and periodically swallow the Sun and Moon, creating eclipses—symbolizing their power to obscure clarity and create confusion.

When Rahu and Ketu occupy unfavorable positions in your birth chart or create specific doshas (afflictions), they manifest as:

  • Rahu effects: Obsession, addiction, confusion, deception, sudden gains followed by losses, foreign connections, technology-related issues
  • Ketu effects: Detachment, isolation, spiritual confusion, accidents, sudden losses, separation from family, occult experiences

The Rahu Ketu Puja neutralizes these negative influences through sacred offerings, specific mantras, and worship of planetary deities combined with Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha. The ritual creates positive karmic adjustments that allow the beneficial aspects of these planets to emerge while minimizing destructive patterns.

Trimbakeshwar holds special power for this puja because Lord Shiva, who consumed the poison (halahala) during ocean churning, has authority over all planetary energies including Rahu and Ketu. The Jyotirlinga’s concentrated divine presence amplifies the ritual’s effectiveness exponentially.
